I’m bringing my Clone to Tiki Oasis and he would like to have an adventure.

I’m bringing my Clone to Tiki Oasis and he would like to have an adventure.

#DarbsTikiOasisAdventure
Last year I wrote a blog about bumping into my Clone at Tiki Oasis….
http://pineapplemantiki.blogspot.com/2014/08/tiki-oasis-2014-episode-1-attack-of.html

It thought it was funny because I have always talked about wanting  to have a Clone at Tiki Oasis because after you go to Tiki Oasis you feel like there is so much that you missed out on . You can’t be at or see all the cool things that are going on .  I actually have a Clone (a cardboard cut out of myself that I got as a joke for my 40th birthday a couple years ago).

I thought it might be funny to bring him this year and basically send him on an wild tiki adventure---see how many people and places he could go and have his picture taken with.

Of course this is really risky – he could end up face first in a dumpster before he had any fun.  Or I could send him on his adventure and no pictures of his adventures might get posted and I will still never know what he experienced.
My hope is that instead of him getting killed that he could get passed around and taken places on property with photos of his adventures being posted –so I can see what I missed out on through his photos.   I’m still not sure whether to try this –but I think it would be really funny if it was done right.  I would like to do a Blog about his adventures if this plan works.

His name is Darb .
He will have instructions written on him that will read:
My Clone wants to experience Tiki Oasis.   Take him on an adventure.

Post pictures of him on Facebook as  #DarbsTikiOasisAdventure

I’ll kick things off by with a few photos with The Pineappleman’s crew once we get settled in on Friday afternoon.

When you tell people you are going to Tiki Oasis and they ask “What is Tiki Oasis?”

When you tell people you are going to Tiki Oasis and they ask  “What is Tiki Oasis?”

How do you answer that question to people outside the Tiki community?

This year will be my 8th year attending this event – so I guess 8 years ago I was asking that same question at a surf show in San Diego.    How do you describe the event to someone that has never been before?   Trying to describe Tiki Oasis to someone that has never heard of it is like trying to describe Fantasmic at Disneyland to people the first week it opened and no one knew what it was. ( I’ve done since I worked crowd control on Fastasmic opening weekend).   Describing Fantasmic went something like this  “Well it has large screens of water that they project movie images on  them and there are floats and a battle on a Pirate ship with fireworks and a Dragon that sets the river on fire”  ---wait a 15 seconds and repeat to the next guest.

Trying to describe Tiki Oasis is almost as difficult.

I guess I usually would say something like this.  “It Is an event that happens in San Diego every year where people wear Hawaiian shirts and retro clothing and drink Mai Tais while listening to surf/exotica music.  There is retro shopping in the daytime and bands and rum tastings and things called room crawls with more bands that are sometimes even better than the bands on the main stage.  It is a place where strange things happen like Fire Eating Mermaids swimming in the pools or a burlesque dancer hanging out with a guy in a gorilla suit in an elevator.”    I guess basically it is like Fantasmic -- if Captain Jack Sparrow was putting it on and handing out free rum (tip your bartender).

Maybe the correct answer when someone asks “What is Tiki Oasis?”  should be not to tell people about Tiki Oasis.  In the eight years I’ve been it has become bigger and bigger every single year.  I remember the first year I came when I was lured by the Haunted Surf music theme of Voodoo Island.  I think I just booked a pool view room logging onto the website casually one day.  Last year was the first year we couldn’t get a pool view room ---as we sat down the night the site went live to try and refresh like a nerd trying to get into Comic Con. This year we were lucky to get a room at the hotel at all.  So maybe we should treat Tiki Oasis like Fight Club and not talk about it.  I came with one friend the first year---now our group could charter a short bus.

How would you describe the Oasis that is Tiki?

I’m running out of words so here are a few pictures from each year I’ve been so far.

Tiki Oasis  2015 is less than 3 weeks away so I'm starting to get in that mood.  Listening to Spyrate Radio and heard this song which is my pick for Tiki song of the week.

A couple of Drink Ideas for Tiki Oasis 2015 and it's sci-fi theme

We stopped by a Total Wine and More after lunch on Father’s Day to see if they had any interesting Wines –and stumbled across a couple of items that fit perfectly with this year’s Tiki Oasis theme.
The first thing that caught my eye was this selection of Three Tequilas from Alien Tequila.

I’m not a Tequila drinker –but for those that are these bottles would look great at your Sci-fi themed Room Crawl at Tiki Oasis.

The Alien Tequila is a company out of the Las Vegas that I recalled seeing somewhere before.  When I looked them up online I recalled that I had seen them on the short lived TV show Naked Vegas---that followed a company that did body painting.  Alien Tequila had been on the show as a client that wanted some painted aliens for a party featuring their product.   Here is their website.   (skip the weird homemade videos advertising the product)
Here are a couple of their drink recipes that would look cool at a Room Crawl.
The Abduction:

  • 1 1/2 oz Alien Tequila Silver
  • 1 oz Vodka
  • 1 oz Rum
  • 1 oz Gin
  • 1 oz Blue Curacao
  • 1 1/2 oz Sweet & Sour Mix
  • Pour into glass with a splash of Coke

The Little Green Men
  •  1 1/2 oz Alien Tequila Silver
  • 1 1/4 oz Midori
  • 1/2 oz Mailbu Bananas
  • 3/4 oz Rose's Lime Juice
  • Shake ingredients with ice and pout into glass--Top off with Sprite

The Deep Impact
  • 1 1/4 oz Alien Tequila Silver
  • 3/4 oz Chambord
  • 3/4 oz Blue Curacao
  • 1/4 oz  Rose's Lime Juice
  • Red Bull
  • Shake ingredients with ice and pour - Top off with Red Bull

The other thing we saw at Total Wine and more was this beer called Cosmonaut Blonde Ale.   I bought one of these to try to see if it should make the cooler that will be heading down to San Diego in August.
Love the label that has an art style that should be familiar to many folks.

Retro/Tiki News : Some cool upcoming fun at Downtown Disney this summer: SHAG, Rockabilly, Polynesian Music

A Retro/Tiki  News update!!
Retro/Tiki fun coming to Downtown Disney

Here is a quick list of some cool stuff happening at Downtown Disney this Summer that may interest the Retro/Tiki crowd.

The Great thing about this is that you can park for the first couple of hours for free at the Downtown Disney Parking lot and it doesn't cost anything to get into Downtown Disney:

Theses events are connected with Disneyland's 60th Anniversary.
It seems like all of these events are perfect for the lovers of Retro and or Tiki.   I'm definitely going to head over there on July 25th for SHAG singing at the WonderGround Gallery --but may be able to hit one of the other events as well since I work down the street from Disneyland.   Here is a list of what is going on from Downtownd Disney's own website.
