When you find something Tiki and your not even looking for it: Ruby's in San Clemente's Tiki Room

We recently went on our yearly trip down to San Clemente.   
If money was no object I would live somewhere with a balcony overlooking the ocean and sit every night listening to the sounds of the waves crashing against the beach.    I commented this year that when I get to heaven if it doesn’t have a view of the ocean I’ll know I’m in the wrong place.    It seems like there has been something Tiki going on every single week since Tiki Oasis, but we weren’t expecting to see anything Tiki this weekend.

Of course Tiki seems to find us even when we aren't looking for it.  We had breakfast on the pier and randomly bumped into Spike from The Hula Girls.  Then on our way home the kids wanted to stop and the Outlet Stores in San Clemente.  After too much shopping we decided to grab lunch at the Ruby’s and came across some retro fun that included a private Enchanted Tiki Room that can be rented for private parties.

Here are some pictures of the retro goodness that is the Ruby’s at the San Clemente outlets.

It is a small room at the back of the restaurant --but it includes a small outdoor patio as well.  A birthday party was going on so I couldn't take detailed photos --but here is a glimpse.

This Ruby's was really cool.  The kitchen area sits inside on old Air Stream trailer.

Yacht Rock: Yachty By Nature at Sea Legs at the Beach

Yachty By Nature  is a Yacht Rock band in Southern California.

They call themselves the Captains of Smooth Yacht Rock. They are a fun and entertaining band playing soft rock from the 70's and 80's and one hell of a good time.   We finally got a chance to see them the other day at Sea Legs at the Beach in Bolsa Chica and hope to see them again soon.   

Sea Legs at the Beach is a cool beach venue.  It was like a fun beach party.

Captain Carl is the Captain of this collection of groovy dudes in nautical hats.  He plays the keyboards and captains this fun journey into music from the past.  (You know you are starting to get old when the music you grew up with is becoming retro.)  I would describe Captain Carl as being like a really great character that you would expect Will Ferrell to play.  I mean that as a great compliment.  He is an absolute blast and I found him both hilarious and talented.  Captain Carl is the man!

I absolutely feel in love with this band a couple songs into their first set.  

The Dr. is in.  Rocking the sax and lead vocals on some of the songs.

Big Wave Dave is having a blast on the drums

And then there is Scotty McYachty. (Best Yacht name ever).

Killing on the locals for a majority of the songs.

This cat even walks around with swagger like he belongs at the Yacht Club.

Shopping Tiki & Beyond :Retro shopping for Oasis on 4th Street in Long Beach

 Apparently my Hawaiian Shirts aren't wild enough for Oasis ---so we headed down to the Art District in Long Beach to look for some wilder Retro Hawaiian shirts.........and stop at a little Tiki Shop where I got a few mugs a few years back before the beach party.

Chatted with the lady in the store about Oasis  which she will be going to and my wife picked out a mug of her own for Crawling.

Meow!  had the most interesting retro collection ...This Wild Shirt ---one that looked like  Smokey and the Bandit and some wild  pantsuits for the ladies

 Definitely an area to check out if you are looking for something Retro.  There are at least  6  or  7 stores to explore and a couple of thrift stores to boot.
